GOTW Plague Tapes #53

By Dr. Groove

Tuesday 7th July 19.00hrs

Plague Tapes #53 see’s Dr. Groove obsess a little bit about the rain, and that features in a lot of the tunes.   We have a little section where we recommend you give yourself 20 minutes of ‘me time’ and just earth yourself with the sounds coming from your spearkers, whether they be small headphones or speakers in your gaff as you look out at the rain running down your windows.

News with Andrew, where we give you all the latest information from the press conferences.  We are seeing internationally where countries are beginning to go into a lock down again.  C-19 is still infectious, and it will punish people who are blase in their approach towards it.  We clarify what is the postion on international travel, it is recommended that people do not travel aboard.   We see the results of the light regulation / no enforcement around Pubs opening up as restaurants.  We talk about rumours of tourist sightings around the country.  We note that over 500,000 peopel have downloaded the tracing app.  We talk about the fact that 17% of cases are now due to tavel.  We examine why 35% of people who an contact traced do not put themselves forward for testing.  And we wait and ask that you continue to do all the right things, in terms of wearing masks, and washing hands, and maintaining physical distance, because that will help whilst we wait.

Finally we play a song from Ennio Morricone, who recently passed.  The song was for Sacco & Vanzetti

Here’s to you, Nicola and Bart
Rest forever here in our hearts
The last and final moment is yours
That agony is your triumph

“If it had not been for these things, I might have lived out my life talking at street corners to scorning men. I might have died, unmarked, unknown, a failure. Now we are not a failure. This is our career and our triumph. Never in our full life we could have hoped to do such work for tolerance, for justice, for man’s understanding of man as we now do by accident. Our words—our lives—our pains—nothing! The taking of our lives—lives of a good shoemaker and a poor fish peddler—all! That last moment belongs to us—that agony is our triumph.”
– Bartolomeo Vanzetti

GOTW Plague Tapes #52

By Dr. Groove

Friday 3rd July 14:00hrs

Plague Tapes #52 is a long one with the standard format, of about an hour of good music, mostly beats, hip hop, and then a bit of wild guitar noise at the end.

We have an interview with Fin Dwyer, the historian behind the popular Irish History Podcast,  in order to get an historians point of view on the uncertain times that we all find ourselves in.

News with Andrew, we catch up with how the domestic battle against Covid 19 is going,  we correct our figures on confirmed new daily cases in the USA going over 40,000, and is over 50,000 again today.   We sketch out the dangers of not gettting quarantining on a more certain, statutory footing, given that the Civil service who were doing it have said that they will not be doing it anymore.   The casual nod and wink arrangment seems to be wonderfully illustrated in phase 43 with no enforcement  around our restaurant/pubs opening up and defying health and safety guidlines.   In Phase 3 we had the debacle around mask wearing on public transport, and how ill prepared or messaged that was.

We now sit and wait for the surge, and hope it’s not massive, before we get to Phase 4.

Love & Rage,

Dr. Groove

GOTW Plague Tapes #51

By Dr. Groove

Thursday  16.00hrs June 25th

Plague Tapes #51 comes to you on a beatuiful hot day in our summer of plague.   The beats, are what we hear and what we chase in this show, as the work of J Dilla is new to me and has inspired me to go hunting down that sound.   We also have just plain old good music all the way through with some rambling links from Dr. Groove and….

News with Andrew, we look at how the cases continue to fall in the right direction, below twenty, as Phase 3 relaxations come into effect on Monday the 29th.  IBEC continue to drive for more changes including a lifting of quarantine, and Andrew maps just what that could look like for all of us, and how we’ll have achieved nothing and gone backwards.  IBEC love making sacrafices to the mysterious gods of the economy and markets, with nothing that looks like result, and in this case all that would result in is more deaths.   The UK continues to be in trouble with cases being very high, yet they too are tranisitioning back to economic activiity without having gotten the virus under control.

Love & Rage,

Dr. Groove

Tracklisting:

  1. Kid Cudi ÷> Just what I am feat. King Chip
  2. J. Dilla ––> My Victory [Instrumental]
  3. Herbie Hancock ––> Gentle Thoughts
  4. Alexanders Dark Band ––> Jimmy’ Stroll
  5. Tribe Called Quest  ––> Excursions
  6. Cobre  ––>  Meet My Phantoms
  7. Tricky ––> Black Coffee
  8. Nightmares on Wax ––> Stars [Instrunmental remix by NOW] from the 12″ Still Smoking II
  9. Yazoo ––> Didn’t I bring your Love Down
  10. Alexander’s Dark Band ––> Vex Disco – with the voice of Howard Zinn
  11. J. Dilla ––> 1nce Again – [Instrumental]
  12. Headhunters ––> Watermelon Man
  13. Nirvana ––> All Apologies

News with Andrew:  Cases low,  on for  Phase 3 is sure to happen on the 29th June and we are hoping to get into the whack a mole containment of any outbreaks.  Meanwhile the goons from IBEC want quarantining such as it is to be totally lifted, and we discuss just what a monstrously bad idea that would be.  The UK and the US are in big trouble and quantantining needs to be sorted, as our little island is wide open to the C19 coming back with a vengence from those places which have absymally failed to deal with it.

14. Apehex Twin ––>   Bike Pump Meets Bucket [taken from 12″ Quoth Single]

Plague Tapes #50 comes to you the morning after we got addressed by the leader, Leo.  The first plague tapes arrived soon after we were addressed by Leo.  We have wonderful music which I’ve not intention of talking over, so listen to the hour or more of music with jazz, beatiful singers, lads from Iceland and Dublin, drummers & composers from London and Chicago and stuff that I don’t even have knowledge about beyond it sounds good.

News with Andrew and we analyse what is going to happen in Phase 3, scheduled to happen on the 29th June, and we look at the infrastructure that is there to support it, what we’re risking, and look at what is going on in other econmomies which have opened up themselves earlier, what is this new normal we are heading into, and what can be done in terms of getting quarantine onto a more certain footing, and we look at figures from the North of Ireland and how they compared to us.

Love & Rage,

GOTW Plague Tapes #49

By Dr. Groove

Wednesday 23.00hrs June 17th

Plague Tapes #49  comes to you the day after Bloomsday.  So no going on the lash pretending that we’d all read the great Ulysses, and instead we bring you an hours worth of wonderful music, starting with Truth and ending with Baby Huey asking when this change is going to come.

News with Andrew talks about where R might be, the floated idea, like a turd in a bowl, of the pubs opening up to serving nine euro meals and making sure everyones out the door after 90 minutes, and the new government appear to be mirroring the Tories in the UK, with brining down the 2 meter requirement.  Business and politics, hand in infected glove.

Love & Rage,

Dr. Groove

Tracklisting:

  1. Kamasi Washington –> Truth
  2. Duke Ellington –> Creol Love Call
  3. Funk Inc. –> Where Are We Going [1974]
  4. The Cinematic Orchestra –> All That You Give feat. Fontella Bass
  5. Charles Mingus –> Self-portrait in three colours
  6. Stevie Wonder –> Big Brother
  7. Illdependents –>  Move it on [This is Hazo I believe]
  8. Method Man –> Bring the Pain [Chemical Vocal]
  9. Dizzee Rascal  –>  Dreamin’
  10. Peanut Butter Wolfe –> Mobbin
  11. Parliament –> Together
  12. Peanut Butter Wolf –> Phonies (edit)
  13. Baby Huey –> A Changne is going to come

News with Andrew: Cases running below 15>  but we hit a palteau, R is probably creeping back up to near 1.0, and the opening up has been speeded up, so that pubs that were supposed to open up at the end of august are opening up on the 29th, as restaurants, and they may even be getting rid of the 2 meter distancing, and that sounds like it could all go very badly wrong.

GOTW Plague Tapes #48

By Dr. Groove

Saturday  June 13th 10.00hrs  Plague Tapes #48

Plague Tapes #48 comes to you on a Friday evening, scratch that an equally very damp and disappointing Saturday morning in June in the year of our plague, 2020, where the most exciting thing that happened for some young ones is that Penny’s opened up.   We have news later on with Andrew [more detail below]  where we talk about why you cannot let IBEC get their way, because that is the rapid way to a second surge.   We start with some street wisdom from Radio Raheem, and have a theme of home which keeps coming up in the music part of the show, and then we have powerful hip hop in the form of Run The Jewels 4 – available on free download, but make a contribution to the Mass Defence Fund.

Love & Rage,

Dr. Groove

Tracklisting:

  1. Radio Raheem Love & Hate Speech –> Do the right thing – film 1989 by Spike Lee
  2. Boards of Canada –> An Eagle In Your Mind
  3. Explosions in the Sky –> Let Me In
  4. Al Green –> Call me (come back home)
  5. Curtis Mayfield –> Back To The World [1973]
  6. Unkle –> Lonely Soul feat. Richard Ashcroft
  7. Keith Jarrett –> My Song
  8. Run The Jewels –> Pulling the Pin feat. Mavis Staples & Josh Homme
  9. Run The Jewels –> A Few Words for the Firing Squad
  10. Marvin Gaye –> What’s happening Brother
  11. Radiohead –> House of Cards
  12. J. Dilla –> Fuck The Police
  13. Miles Davis –> Honky Tonk
  14. Autechre –>Nuane

News with Andrew: Cases running below 20>  Peak was back in April 16th when we had nearly 865 new cases a day, R is probably between 0.4 and 0.8 so we call that 0.6,  working out this over 5 days averages, Internationally real problems in Brazil and India,  USA also appears to be going through a second surge in more rural areas, Seoul in South Korea are battling with a comeback. and how we cannot give IBEC what they want because that brings us an assured surge and costs lives, and what is the plan for arriving people from infectious regions such as our near neighbours in the UK.
